For the Vintage Yamahas

Hi Guys, just about finished the re wire of this 1986 xj600, my question concerns the little bulb within the headlamp and its relationship to the R/H light switch and which has three positions in the UK Off....PO...On. At the moment when i move the switch to PO the small bulb within the headlamp comes on, when i push the switch to 'ON' the main bulb lights up and the small bulb stays on is this ok? The black wire which leads to the bulb holder had come adrift so i have re soldered it back to its position...... bit mystified at the mo!! Cheers

Ok so trying to figure out which carb kit I need to by for my 1980(what the title says) yamaha xs400 special (had special badging on the airbox cover panels originally).... I found some pretty cheap from partsnmore.com... but which one, is it the G model? Also, under the carb holders there is no G model but they do have an XS400S? https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index.php?mo...p;category=carb

Hi! I'm completely new to this forum, and to the motorbike world for that matter... I have just bought a 1983 Yamaha xs400 - 12E. Unfortunately, the tach wire is broken. It seems kind of hard to get a new one (at least in Norway, where I live). Do any of you know if the xs400 tach wire is compatible with any other (preferebly newer) bike models? - Or where I might get a new "original" xs400 tachometer wire. Thanks for any answers.

I have a 1981 xs 400 and recently lost my keys to it. While replacing the ignition was easy the question is now how do I get the locking gas tank cap off. Is this possible or is getting the gas cap re-keyed a possibility???? thanks

  12. Just picked up an '83 maxim 400 and this seems to be the best place for info on these bikes... basically wanting to know some basic info about the bike .. i realize this is the dohc version of the standard sohc xs400 engine.. does it make more power because of it or run any differently? So far the bike starts great.. seems to take forever to warm up... and even then doesnt seem to run smoothly .. especially between 3.5-6k rpms ... carbs have been cleaned. Only about 15 min of run time so far as I'm waiting to get it licensed so perhaps running the bike a bit will smooth it out after sitting for a few years. I'm sure i'll have a few more questions that I'm not remember…

I recently purchased a 1982 XS400J Maxim. The original non o-ring chain is in place (530 size). Does anyone know if a 530 o-ring would work? An o-ring chain is about 1.5mm wider than the standard chain. I don't have an old chain lying around to see if it would work. Thanks.

  16. Alright, first of all, thanks for taking a look at this little problem! Since I got it a month ago it has never fired for me on the right cylinder. I have the parts manual and a service manual from another xs400 of the same year so feel free to reference them. I'm putting the bike back together and here's what I've done to try and fix or diagnose: -Took the carb apart and cleaned it, checked the pilot screws and one was all the way in so I backed it out 2 1/2 turns as per the service manual. -Put in brand new spark plugs, caps, and spark wires on both sides. I have checked and there is spark on the both sides. -Checked what was coming out of the exhaust of that…

Help! I'm looking for the "factory settings" for the LS2 because I can't seem to get the air-fuel mix just right and can't seem to find the darn thing on the internet anywhere! It has Mikuni carbs, which I'm not sure are originalDoes anyone know a good site, or be able to give advice? Just installed cone filters, and by adjusting throttle cable and carbs can get to idle perfectly, but after revving if I don't bring it back down SLOWLY (and sometimes even if I do) it dies. Help me! Thanks.

Hello, I have a 1975 XS500 and my mechanic CUT off the cam chain instead of taking it off the right way. Now my bike has no cam chain, and me nor my mechanic can find another. Do any of you know where I may be able to find one? Thanks, Beth

  20. Started by plumber,

I just got a 1988 Radian to teach my wife to ride. The bike was free. It has been sitting awhile. I drained and cleaned the gas tank and carbs. Now I can get it to start with the choke fully on, but as soon as I turn the choke off the bike dies. I know nothing about these type of bikes. Do I have a carb problem a timing problem or a valve adjustment problem? Dont know where to start. I did replace the needles, seats, and floats in the carbs. I did check the intake adaptors and they dont seam to be leaking. Like I said the bike was free and I really dont want to take it to a shop, and I also enjoy working on thses type of things. Any suggestions?
